  • Dear President Salovey,

In a year of global tragedy, Local 34 members have been essential workers on the frontlines of higher education. We have worked to provide health care, to keep the Yale community safe, to facilitate online learning, and to ensure successful University operations. We have done this while losing second jobs, juggling dependent care responsibilities, supporting unemployed family members, and struggling with deep personal loss. Our work makes Yale work.

Instead of recognizing our work, as well as the pain the pandemic is causing us and our communities, Yale wants to undermine our wages and benefits we have fought to build for decades. Yale is threatening our jobs and, in some cases, it is already subcontracting out our work to workers who lack our contract's protections.

While COVID has ravaged the economy, Yale’s wealth has reached new heights. The endowment has grown to a record $31.2 billion, and our members in Development delivered the third-highest fundraising year ever. Yale can afford to maintain our standard not only for us but for more New Haven residents.

  • President Salovey, I call on you to respect our work, protect our jobs, and ensure that good union jobs grow as Yale grows. More than 3000 of our members signed a petition calling on the University to act. Reject the path of outsourcing, leaving positions vacant, and giving our work to people outside the union. Instead, invest in your staff.
