We need immediate action from our landlords and local, state and federal elected leaders:
- Cancel rent payments and suspend accrual of unpaid rent debt for the duration of the state of emergency, plus one month.
- Respond to our safety concerns in our apartment buildings and at work during this COVID19 period.
- Future rent should be dependent on income.
UNITE HERE Local 23 is the union of food service and parking workers in the DC Metro Area. Sami (pictured above) is a leader in the cafeteria where he works, at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda. Like other shop leaders in our union, he has fought for years to stop unfair and discriminatory bosses, bring his coworkers together, and win a more just workplace. Today Sami is one of the 98% of all members of our union who are unemployed at home without a certain date to return to work.
Organizing together like we do in our union is the way to have power to win what we deserve. At home today, it is even more necessary that families and neighbors stick together. Due to the impact of COVID-19, we are facing a health and economic crisis that affects all of us.
You do not need to face this crisis alone! All over Northern Virginia and the DC Metro Area, neighbors are reaching out to neighbors to build networks to support each other, share information, and raise our voices together.
